Sanshoku doujun: the same sequence in three suits
Sanshoku doujun uses the same sequence in man, pin, and sou, for 2 han closed or 1 han when the hand is open.
The principle
Sanshoku doujun (三色同順), often shortened to sanshoku, requires the same sequence in all three number suits. For example, 456m, 456p, and 456s form the core of the yaku. The fourth group and pair may use any legal tiles.
Rule and example
The yaku is worth 2 han closed and 1 han open because of kuisagari. A call can therefore accelerate the hand while reducing its value. The right choice depends on shanten, ukeire, dora, and how urgently the game situation calls for a win.
What changes
Do not confuse it with sanshoku doukou. Doujun uses three matching sequences, while doukou uses the same numbered triplet in all three suits. Both are worth 2 han closed, but sanshoku doukou keeps its 2 han when open.
Mistake to avoid
A possible sanshoku often appears when two sequences are nearly complete and a few useful tiles remain in the third suit. Do not keep a weak tile only for the name of the yaku. Compare the value gained with the ukeire lost on every discard.
