What you will actually play

Riichi is four-player Japanese mahjong, played with 136 tiles. Most winning hands form four groups and a pair, while yaku, dora, defense, and hidden information shape every decision.

Instant guest tables play a tonpuusen against three computer opponents. Ranked tables use a full hanchan and update your Glicko-2 rating.

Tonpuusen: East round

About 20 minutes, ideal for a first game or a quick table.

Hanchan: East and South

About 40 minutes, the complete format used for ranked play.

How a hand actually plays

Four players, 136 tiles, and one real decision per turn. This is the loop you repeat until someone wins the hand.

Draw, then discard

On your turn you take one tile and let one go, so the hand stays at 13 tiles. Every draw is a small trade: keep what improves the shape, discard what no longer works with it.

Call chi, pon or kan

You can claim a discard to complete a group. A call makes the hand faster but reveals part of it and closes off several yaku. The buttons appear only when the call is legal.

Declare riichi at tenpai

One tile from a win with a closed hand, you can stake 1,000 points and lock the hand. You gain uradora if you win, and the whole table now knows you are waiting.

Win by ron or tsumo

Take the winning tile from a discard (ron) or from your own draw (tsumo). The hand is counted in han and fu, dora are added, points move, and the next kyoku deals immediately.

The rules your table runs on

A table declares its rules before the first deal, and the exact configuration is stored with the game.

Tenhou rules, the default

Aka dora on, 25,000 start for a 30,000 return, uma 20/10/-10/-20, nagashi mangan and abortive draws allowed, double ron. Used by instant guest tables and by ranked play.

WRC 2025

The reference tournament rules: no aka dora, no abortive draws, 30,000 start, full hanchan. Pick it in a private table when you are preparing for a live EMA or WRC event.

M-League

Aka dora on, uma 30/10/-10/-30 above the 20,000 oka, the settlement used by the Japanese professional league. It is also the profile of the M-League replays published in the news section.

The ruleset is versioned and attached to the game record, so a hand scored two months ago is still read under the same rules when you reopen its replay or its review.

After the last hand

A finished game is more than a score line. It leaves material you can go back through.

Step through the replay

The whole game is kept and can be replayed hand by hand, from any seat, including the tiles you could not see while you were playing.

Review your discards

The review puts each of your discards next to the engine choice and shows what the difference cost. One complete review is free without an account; a player profile keeps them with your games.

Rating and rank

A ranked game updates your Glicko-2 rating and your kyu/dan rank. Your placements feed the leaderboard, your public profile, and your own statistics.

Questions before you sit down

Is riichi mahjong free to play here?

Yes. Guest play and ranked games are free. Premium is optional and adds more detailed AI analysis rather than unlocking the game itself.

Do I need to download anything?

No. Tenpai runs in a modern browser on desktop and mobile. Installing the optional PWA only adds convenient app-like access.

Can I play riichi mahjong against the computer?

Yes. An instant guest game seats you against three computer opponents, and dedicated training lets you choose among four AI strengths.

Can I play with friends?

Yes. Create a private table and share its link. Up to four players take seats, and guests can join without creating an account.

Do I need an account?

Not for a guest game. A player profile is required for ranked play, saved progress, match history, and the review of a saved guest game.

I have never played riichi. Where should I start?

Start with the interactive learning path, then play a guest tonpuusen. Daily puzzles will help you recognize efficient discards and common shapes.

Can I play riichi mahjong on my phone?

Yes. The table is built for touch and runs in a mobile browser. Installing Tenpai as a PWA from the browser menu adds app-like access, but it stays optional.

Which ruleset do the tables use?

Instant and ranked tables use the Tenhou ruleset, aka dora included. A private table can run WRC 2025 instead, and the exact configuration is stored with the game.

What happens if I lose my connection mid-game?

Your seat is held for two minutes. Reopen the page inside that window and you are back at the same hand with the same tiles. A game runs 20 to 40 minutes, so this is handled as normal rather than as an edge case.
