The three furiten
Discard furiten, temporary furiten and riichi furiten: the three situations that forbid a ron in riichi mahjong while never blocking your tsumo.
Discard furiten
Furiten forbids the ron but never the tsumo. The first case is discard furiten (kawa furiten): if any of your waiting tiles already sits in your own kawa, you are furiten across your whole wait, not only on that one tile. As long as your wait shape includes a tile you have discarded, you cannot call ron.
Temporary furiten
The second case is temporary furiten. If a discard completes a valid hand and you do not win, even without a yaku, you become furiten across the whole wait. Under Tenhou, it lasts until your next discard and your own call does not clear it immediately. WRC 2025 clears it on your next draw or your own call.
Riichi furiten
The third case is riichi furiten. Once you declare riichi your hand is frozen: if a tile that completes your hand passes without you winning, you stay furiten until the end of the hand. Ron is lost for the rest of that hand, but tsumo remains allowed.
The in-game check
In practice, check your kawa before locking a wait, and beware temporary furiten when several winning tiles circulate quickly. Passing a small ron in riichi while hoping for more leaves only tsumo for the rest of that hand.
