Honroutou: terminals and honors

Honroutou is worth 2 han for a hand containing only terminals and honors, with at least one tile from each category.

Honroutou rule and value

Honroutou (混老頭), often translated as all terminals and honors, accepts only 1s, 9s, and the seven honors. The hand must contain at least one terminal and at least one honor. A hand made entirely of honors becomes tsuuiisou, while one made entirely of terminals becomes chinroutou. Those two patterns are yakuman rather than simple versions of honroutou.

Honroutou with toitoi or chiitoitsu

None of these tiles can form a sequence, so every honroutou also scores either toitoi or chiitoitsu. The winning structure is four triplets or kans and a pair, or seven distinct pairs. Honroutou itself is worth 2 han. An open triplet hand remains valid, but the seven-pairs interpretation must stay closed.

Speed, calls, and ukeire

The yaku looks generous, yet its ukeire can collapse quickly. Terminals and honors are often discarded early, which creates pon opportunities but may also exhaust a tile type you still need for the pair. Before calling, count visible copies and make sure a realistic route to toitoi remains. A pile of terminals and honors is not automatically a fast hand.

Compatible yaku and defensive reads

Honroutou may also score yakuhai, sanankou, or shousangen when the groups meet their conditions. Check each one rather than adding it by default. On defense, repeated calls on terminals and honors reveal a readable but expensive plan, especially once value winds or dragon groups are already exposed.
