Ryanpeikou: two pairs of identical sequences
Ryanpeikou is a 3-han closed yaku built from two separate pairs of identical sequences in their respective suits.
Ryanpeikou rule and value
Ryanpeikou (二盃口) reads like two iipeikou in one hand. Four sequences must form two pairs, with each pair using the exact same numbers in the same suit. The fifth component is an ordinary pair. The hand must remain fully closed, and the yaku is worth 3 han.
A valid ryanpeikou hand
The shape 112233m 445566p 77s is a clean example. The man tiles make two 123m sequences, the pin tiles make two 456p sequences, and 77s is the pair. The tiles can also look like seven pairs, but one hand never scores ryanpeikou and chiitoitsu together.
Ryanpeikou, iipeikou, and chiitoitsu
Ryanpeikou replaces iipeikou rather than stacking with it. It can still combine with riichi, menzen tsumo, tanyao, or chinitsu when the rest of the hand satisfies those conditions. Its final value therefore depends on both the structure and the tiles used.
When to preserve the pattern
A common trap is protecting one pair of identical sequences while the second pair is still remote. Compare shanten and ukeire before breaking a healthy shape. Ryanpeikou is a reward for a pattern that develops naturally, not a reason to force a slow hand.
