Each team has four players residing outside Japan. Each member may play more than twenty games: their highest total across a twenty-hanchan run enters the team score.
A flexible schedule with fixed playing windows
Saturdays from July 4 through October 24 form the regular-season window, with play listed from 13:00 to 17:00 UTC. A team therefore does not need all four members to sit for one shared round every week. Each player builds an individual game record during the allowed period, and that score feeds the team total.
That flexibility suits a worldwide league where time zones and local calendars overlap. It does not remove the commitment: the rules require at least twenty games from every player. A team with a missing member or a player below that threshold does not have a compliant total for the next stage.
The highest total across a twenty-hanchan run
Twenty is a minimum, not a cap. The rules allow more games and retain the highest total achieved across a twenty-hanchan run. Results are not selected individually from across the whole season.
The official wording is “best run of 20 hanchan,” rather than twenty scores selected independently. Standings can therefore change until the regular season closes.

From the league table to the final four
The top eight teams then advance to the Best 8 stage. At that point, the competition moves beyond simple score accumulation. The top four teams from the Best 8 advance to the final. The official page lists that final for November 22 at 13:00 UTC while still marking the schedule as subject to confirmation.
World Riichi says the final will be broadcast with commentary on the Japan Professional Mahjong League channel.
A 2028 WRC entry among the prizes
The announced prizes include entry to the 2028 World Riichi Championship in New York for a player residing outside Japan.
