Daisangen: big three dragons
Daisangen is a yakuman containing a triplet or kan of each dragon, whether the hand is open or closed.
The principle
Daisangen (大三元) requires a complete group of white dragons, green dragons, and red dragons. Each group may be a triplet or kan, open or concealed. The fourth group and pair are unrestricted as long as they complete a legal hand.
Rule and example
Two dragon groups and a pair of the third dragon make shousangen, not daisangen. Shousangen is worth 2 han and normally combines with the two yakuhai from the completed dragon groups. Completing the third group upgrades this family of patterns to yakuman.
What changes
Calls can make daisangen develop quickly, but they also announce the danger to the whole table. Once a player exposes two dragons, the final dragon becomes critical. Depending on the ruleset and how the third group is fed, pao liability may apply.
Mistake to avoid
A genuine yakuman does not add the han from yakuhai or dora to its payment. The correct reading is to identify daisangen, then check separately for any other yakuman. Ordinary bonuses no longer change its value.
