Chanta: terminals and honors in every group
Chanta requires a terminal or honor in every group and the pair, with at least one sequence and at least one honor in the hand.
The principle
Chanta (混全帯幺九) requires each of the four groups and the pair to contain either a terminal, 1 or 9, or an honor. The hand must also include at least one sequence and at least one honor. It is worth 2 han closed and 1 han open.
Rule and example
The hand 123m 789m 111p 789s EE is a clean example. Every sequence reaches an end, the triplet uses a terminal, and the East pair supplies the required honor. Replace EE with 99p and the only honor disappears: the same structure becomes junchan.
What changes
Chanta can combine with sanshoku doujun, ittsuu, iipeikou, or yakuhai when their own conditions are met. Calling chi or pon does not remove chanta, but it lowers the value by one han and removes closed-only yaku such as riichi and iipeikou.
Mistake to avoid
The common mistake is seeing many terminals and honors without checking the two defining conditions. A hand with no sequence may be honroutou or toitoi instead. A hand with no honor may be junchan. Check every group, then the pair, before counting chanta.
