Junchan: terminals everywhere, no honors
Junchan requires a terminal in every group and the pair, at least one sequence, and no honors; it is worth 3 han closed or 2 open.
Junchan rule and value
Junchan (純全帯幺九) requires a terminal, 1 or 9, in each of the four groups and in the pair. The hand must contain at least one sequence and may not use any honor. It is worth 3 han closed and 2 han after a call.
A valid junchan hand
The hand 123m 789m 111p 789s 99p meets the rule: every group reaches an end, the pair is terminal, and no wind or dragon appears. A 2 or 8 can sit inside a 123 or 789 sequence, but a group such as 456 has no terminal and breaks the yaku.
Junchan, chanta, and honroutou
Junchan can combine with sanshoku doujun, ittsuu, and, in a closed hand, iipeikou. It never combines with chanta because having no honors is exactly what upgrades the pattern from chanta to junchan. It also does not combine with honroutou, which allows no sequences.
When to open the hand
This hand is often slower than it first looks. Middle tiles connect blocks well, while terminals have fewer ways to improve. Do not open simply because junchan survives calls: compare shanten, ukeire, and the value lost before each chi or pon.
