Fu points
Fu are the minipoints that, together with han, set a winning riichi hand's score: base value, wait, triplets, pair and how you won.
The principle
Every standard winning hand starts at 20 fu, the base value called fuutei. Points are then added according to the hand's structure, and the total is rounded up to the next multiple of ten. Chiitoitsu is the exception at a fixed 25 fu. Fu then combine with han to produce the final payment.
Rule and example
The main additions are easy to memorize. Winning by tsumo is worth +2 fu (except with pinfu), and a ron on a closed hand adds +10 fu (menzen kafu). A closed wait, kanchan (middle tile), penchan (edge 1-2 or 8-9) or tanki (pair wait), is worth +2 fu, while a ryanmen or shanpon wait is worth 0.
What changes
Simple triplets are worth 2 fu open or 4 concealed; terminal or honor triplets are worth 4 or 8. Simple kan are worth 8 fu open or 16 concealed; terminal or honor kan are worth 16 or 32. A dragon, seat-wind or round-wind pair adds 2 fu. Under Tenhou, a double-wind pair stacks both roles for 4 fu; WRC 2025 limits it to 2 fu.
Mistake to avoid
Pinfu is 20 fu on tsumo and 30 on ron. Chiitoitsu is always 25 fu without rounding. An open hand that would remain at 20 fu is raised to 30 fu on ron. Tenhou leaves 4 han 30 fu at 7,700 on a non-dealer ron, while WRC 2025 applies kiriage mangan to 4 han 30 fu and 3 han 60 fu.
