Riichi mahjong scoring
Calculate a riichi score in the right order: yaku and han, fu, base value, the ron or tsumo multiplier, then rounding.
The scoring method
Identify the yaku first, then add their han and any dora bonuses. For an ordinary hand below mangan, round fu up to the next ten and calculate base value as fu × 2^(2 + han). Apply the seat and win-method multiplier, then round each payment up to the next hundred. Limit tiers replace the formula.
Counting han
Han come from yaku first. Then add one han for each dora, uradora revealed after a riichi win, and aka-dora enabled by the ruleset. A bonus can never make a muyaku hand legal. Under Tenhou rules, an ordinary hand with 13 or more han reaches kazoe yakuman. WRC 2025 gives the same payment under the name yonbaiman without treating it as a genuine yakuman.
Counting fu
A standard hand starts at 20 fu. Add 10 fu for a closed ron and normally 2 fu for tsumo, except pinfu. Tanki, kanchan, and penchan waits add 2 fu. Dragon, seat-wind, and round-wind pairs add 2 fu each; a double-wind pair is 4 fu under Tenhou and 2 fu under WRC 2025. Triplets and kan are worth more when concealed or made of terminals and honors. Chiitoitsu stays exactly 25 fu.
Limits and payments
Mangan begins at 5 han or at the capped base value of 2,000. Haneman covers 6 or 7 han, baiman 8 to 10, sanbaiman 11 or 12, and Tenhou awards kazoe yakuman from 13 han. A non-dealer ron pays 4 times base and a dealer ron 6 times. On tsumo, the dealer pays twice base and the others once, unless the dealer wins, in which case everyone pays twice base. Each honba adds 300 points in total.
A complete example
Example: a non-dealer wins by ron with a closed hand containing riichi and pinfu, with no dora. It is 2 han 30 fu: 20 base fu plus 10 for closed ron. Base value is 30 × 2^4, or 480. A non-dealer ron multiplies that by 4 to make 1,920, then rounding up to the next hundred sets the payment at 2,000 points before honba and riichi deposits.
